How to Easily Write a Best Man Speech
So, you’ve been asked to be the best man. Chances are, you know the groom quite well. Maybe you also know that at the wedding reception, you’ll be expecting to give a toast - a best man speech. To help you prepare for the speech, here are just a few things you should remember.
*Plan it! Don’t make it up on the fly. Even if you’re quick-witted (of course you are!), even the most glib person’s mind can go completely blank without warning.
At the very least, write down a few key phrases and points to bring up if you don’t feel like writing the whole thing.
*Humor is good, but don’t forget to be serious. Okay, that’s an oxymoron, but it’s important. Without a little humor, you risk boring the guests.
But with that in mind, it’s crucial to remember that your best man speech is to be a tribute to the couple and their future. The bride and groom are taking their marriage seriously. They need you to acknowledge and respect that. Sarcasm might be funny and enjoyable in the right circumstances, but please remember that it is NEVER appropriate in a wedding speech.
*Keep it brief. Please don’t ramble on. Before the big day, practice giving your speech in front of another person. Watch them. If their eyes glaze over, you need to trim down your speech.
*Watch the anecdotes. Steer clear of stories about your friend’s old girlfriends, and don’t go telling the guests about embarrassing moments that could make your friend’s new wife want to clobber you. If your buddy’s wife doesn’t like you, don’t expect to see much of your friend after the wedding is over.
*Share something you like - something appropriate! - about the bride. Don’t forget, you want to be endearing yourself to her.
*Above all, be sincere. There’s a reason why you were chosen to be the best man. Keep that in mind and share in the joy of your friend’s happiness. Then, your best man speech will be remembered fondly.
